Our Story, Our People

Stager Sport are the sole authorised Importers and Distributors of Meindl boots in Australia and New Zealand.

Hugh and Ruth Bradley-Stager formed Stager Sport NZ Ltd in 1988 after attending a Trade Fair in Germany where they met Alfons Meindl, then owner and managing director of Lukas Meindl GmbH.

Alfons Meindl was a brilliant bootmaker and a really great person who advised and mentored Hugh and Ruth into the Footwear Industry.

Alfons Meindl

Stager Sport Imports and Distributes an extensive range of Meindl footwear through specialist retail stores in both Australia and New Zealand.

Our People

Stäger Sport has served New Zealand and Australian sportspeople, outdoors aficionados, businesses and Government agencies for 30 Yrs. Directed by Hugh and Ruth Bradley, the company has had a consistent vision to supply only the highest performance and quality products to the market. The company takes its name from Ruth and bears elements of the coat of arms of Mürren, Switzerland where Ruth hails from. Over the decades the company has conducted nearly all facets of supply including design and manufacturing, importation, wholesale distribution, retail and consultancy. Hugh and Ruth now deservedly desire to reduce their outputs and enjoy more time by the river with a fly rod. We’re not letting go that easy though; Ruth will be available several days a week to sort any requirement you may have and Hugh will be focusing on Gunmaking. Both will be here to “keep the young bucks in line” also! As H.R. Bradley Gunmaker, Hugh will focus on his passion for sporting arms and producing the finest quality bespoke arms for the discerning hunter and collector. He will be available and will continue to provide top quality service to our Blaser and Mauser customers to keep your weapons shooting in top order.

Joel Bradley, nephew of Hugh and Ruth, has joined the company and took over as Director from the beginning of March 2016. Joel has retired as a Major after 15Yrs active service with the New Zealand Defence Force. Joel has served in several varied roles in the military including Helicopter Pilot with the Airforce and a Squadron Commander with the Special Forces.

Joel brings significant experience with Meindl footwear, sporting arms, military pistol and carbine, long-range marksmanship and modern technologies associated to all weapons. He completes ongoing training with Meindl and Blaser and looks forward to sharing this experience with you.

Joel has used Meindl footwear avidly during his career in New Zealand, Australia and around the globe. He has tested them in every environment from the mountains of Afghanistan to the jungle of East Timor, and from the open ocean to the desert. Through trying times such as operational deployments and during the harshest tests available to a soldier, he has identified how to get the best from his Meindl boots. He enjoys the opportunity to share advice on the selection, use and maintenance of our products.

Joel and his wife, Dr Danielle Bradley, are looking forward to getting some more miles on their favourite tramping routes under their belts. Joel is also looking forward to putting some meat in the freezer so watch out deer!

Joel is a member of the NZRSA, NZSAS Assc and The Northern Club.

From Joel:

“My wife and I, wish to thank you very much for your continued business and support. Our small but efficient family company has a busy and bright future in our fast paced industry. We aim to serve you well with high performance products, sound advice and competent backup.

In light of our company’s trans-Tasman nature and future growth, it will formally become known as Stäger Sport Australasia Ltd. This is a fitting title that describes our integrated approach to business in our expanding market.

The company is in great shape and my Uncle and Aunt are pioneers in the industry. I look forward to continuing our pursuit of excellence in providing high quality service to our retail business partners, government customers and exclusive clients.

To our business partners and government customers in particular, I thank you in advance for your ongoing partnership. I look forward to continued discussion on your ideas and requirements

Hugh and Ruth Bradley-Stager, Directors and owners of Stager Sport NZ Ltd Hugh and Ruth Bradley-Stager -

.

Ruth is Swiss and was apprenticed in sales and marketing with the famous Swiss shoemakers Bally. Ruth's passion has always been the outdoors, skiing, climbing and trekking and her lifestyle at her alpine home in Murren Switzerland was the catalyst for the development of Stager Sport with her selection of Meindl Footwear; the worlds leading technical bootmakers.

Hugh Bradley originally operated as H.R. Bradley Guns Ltd and then formed the company Bradley Small Arms Manufacturing Ltd in the early 1980's. This company was based at Washdyke in Timaru and manufactured a range of models of rifles from sporting to target in left and right hand in both rimfire and centrefire.

The firearms that Hugh produced at the Bradley Small Arms plant in Timaru received a number of awards, firstly the N.Z. Designmark Award, secondly the NZ Industrial Design Award and finally the Design Council Prince Philip Award of Merit for firearms design and manufacturing methodology.

With the floating of the NZ dollar in the middle 1980's by the Lange government it made it impossible to export product at the greatly increased export prices created by the huge increase in the value of the currency. The company, like many others at the time ceased trading.

Hugh then formed Gunmakers NZ and after a number of years finally amalgamated with Ruth's footwear importing and Stager Sport had evolved.
